inFamous: You’ve Read This Comic

Written by Erik Rapson on July 17th, 2008 1:08 PM

InFamous is a little bit like Brian K. Vaughn’s Ex Machina meets Electro from Spider-Man — and that may not be a bad thing at all. From Sucker Punch Studios, of Sly Cooper fame, their latest PS3 exclusive is a roof leaping sandbox action game full of striking electrical powers. And you can either use those newfound abilities to save a dying city, or destroy it completely.

Hopefully they use the comic-like panels — shown in the trailer — in the game itself. There are few products that can mix mediums well, but with its overt comic style, inFamous may prove to be the right formula.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift: Alive and Kicking

Written by Erik Rapson on July 16th, 2008 11:51 AM

With the likes of Fallout 3, Dead Space and Gears of War 2, it’s difficult to stand out at E3 in such a cluttered crowd. However, MotorStorm Pacific Rift is a premiere exclusive for Sony and, oddly, it was only given the ever so brief trailer treatment at their conference.

The first MotorStorm was light on content, but made up for it with sheer variety to gameplay. Now, if this next outing can double its predecessor and fix those horrid vehicle loading problems — oh, you know if you played it — we will have one fine racer this Holiday season.

MAG is a Massive Action Game. No, Seriously.

Written by Erik Rapson on July 15th, 2008 11:05 PM

The final exclusive game unveiled at Sony’s E3 press conference was SOCOM developer Zipper Interactive’s MAG, which stands for — you guessed it — Massive Action Game. Now, just how massive is it? Apparently 256 players. At first it’s rather worrisome seeing as consoles have barely pushed past 32 as of yet, never mind eight times that number. However, much like Resistance 2, the plan is to break the battlefield into multiple 8 player squads — hopefully making it organized chaos, rather than just plain chaos.

Here is the debut trailer for MAG, unfortunately comprised entirely of pre-rendered footage. In other news, Call of Duty is now called a MFPS (Military First Person Shooter) and BioShock, FPSRPGL (First Person Shooter Role Playing Game Lite). Yeah, the name has really got to go before it becomes a trend.

Ruaumoko? ‘I Am Alive’ Debuts *Update*

Written by Erik Rapson on July 15th, 2008 7:25 PM

At the very end of Ubisoft’s press briefing I Am Alive was given the pun-intended introduction of a brand that’s sure to “shake up the industry”. In what is without a doubt a pre-rendered trailer, we meet Adam; a rather scraggly man running through dust filled halls of rubble.

Six days earlier, Adam was a business sort working in Chicago until an earthquake tore the city to pieces. Noteworthy is ruaumoko.com shown in the background — a URL owned by Ubisoft. In Māori mythology Ruaumoko is the son of Rangi and Papa, a part of their creation myth. The only problem is that the kid has never been born, forever stuck in his mother’s womb and his movements are said to cause earthquakes.

So you heard it here first: Ubisoft’s I Am Alive is about giant unborn babies causing cataclysmic modern day disasters… Probably not, but the reference is interesting nonetheless.

Update: ruaumoko.com now redirects to iamalivegame.com, let the Cloverfield style speculation and advertising begin! Although, hopefully I Am Alive can backup its clever marketing with an equally clever game.

God of War III is Official

Written by Erik Rapson on July 15th, 2008 5:24 PM

At Sony’s E3 press conference the long rumoured God of War III was unveiled via a tantalizing, albeit pre-rendered, trailer. As expected it features Kratos, looking typically angry, and Mt. Olympus crumbling along with the surrounding landscape. Details are scant about the game itself; all we know is that it’s probably a 2009 release, if not beyond.

Fallout 3 Interview and Screenshots

Some gamers are in a fuss about Fallout 3, but you can’t please people with rather irrational expectations — unless of course you stick with decade old design choices. For those without pipe dreams, or a fundamentalist attachment to nostalgia, Fallout 3 is everything it should be. Here are a slew of new screens and an interview with the game’s producer, Todd Howard.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Dead Space Trailer

Written by Erik Rapson on July 15th, 2008 10:28 AM

A derelict spacecraft floats among the stars and seemingly hollow halls ring with silence, but not all is dead on the Ishimura vessel… you know what lurks in the dark. Now, throw in a track of little girls singing a strange twisted version of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and you have the latest trailer for Dead Space, a thoroughly unsettling affair. This year’s BioShock? It certainly wants to be, and that’s meant in the best way possible.

And, just a note, if the video box doesn’t appear right away have patience. The video is indeed streaming and will appear when fully loaded.
